Fordyce spots are the sebaceous glands that are responsible for lubricating the hair follicles but they don’t have hair. They appear in different places like lips, scrotum and shaft of the penis in men, and labia in women. It is a common condition but in certain cases, these spots appear prominently which makes the bearer conscious about them. Up to 80% of adults have these spots since birth but they become elevated or visible after hitting puberty.
These spots are usually yellowish white but they can also appear red pale or skin coloured depending upon the place of their occurrence. They are absolutely harmless and don’t show any symptoms.
Should I be worried about my Fordyce Spots?
As long as there is no change in appearance, itching or bleeding, or appearance of new spots, you can leave them alone as they are mere sebaceous glands with no hair follicles. If they are on your genitals, you may mistake them as pearly penile papules or STI. They do impact the bearer psychologically due to the unappealing appearance. In such cases, it becomes important to opt for treatment.
What are effective treatments of Fordyce spots?
When opting for a treatment, it becomes important to be aware of the expected results. Some treatments do treat the spots but they leave a scar on the treated area. You can choose to have treatment from many of these options;
Topical ointment:Although it sounds attractive but till to date there is no concrete solution with topical ointments or creams.
Laser treatment:CO2 laser treatment for Fordyce spots has been considered as most successful treatment so far. The precise beam of the laser makes sure that it targets only the spots irrespective of the size and vaporises it to a skin surface level. It is very important for the laser operator to vaporise it precisely to the surface and not deep enough to create craters. At Renew Skin and Health Clinic, our clinical lead makes sure that he himself takes the charge of the process, it being a critical treatment. This procedure is painless as it is performed under the effect of local anaesthesia.
Micro-punch surgery:In this process, a pen-style scalpel is used to puncture the glands. You may call it as an invasive process. With the involvement of scalpel there is significant risk of scarring. There are however almost zero chances of recurrence.
