Pearly Penile Papules

As the name indicates these are the papules that appear on the rim of the head of penis. There is no specific reason for their occurrence and they are absolutely harmless. It is a skin condition that comes on its own and may start to vanish as age progresses, but everybody is different. There is always a possibility that 2 PPP cases are very different from each other. If you experience some papules on your penis, it is always recommended to consult a specialist doctor to rule out any other potential infection or wart. As PPP is often mistaken as STI or Genital warts, but they are not.

Symptoms of PPP

  • They are white, pink or translucent in colour.
  • The size may vary from 1-4mm long papules that may look like threads.
  • The papules appear on the corona or head of the penile shaft.
  • They may appear in rows.
  • They are not scratchy, painful or never bleed.

Are these a cause of worry?

As long as they are not showing any symptoms, there is no need to worry about them. They are benign skin growths that sometimes may fade away with time if they are very minimal or small. However, it is always advised that if you notice any sort of lumps or bumps on your penis, scrotum or around the genital area, you must consult your GP or at the local sexual health clinics.

Treatment for Pearly Penile Papules

They are harmless in nature and therefore can be left alone without any need for treatment, but they do impact the patient mentally and make them conscious about such abnormal skin growth. The reason for psychological impact could be their unappealing appearance or sceptical approach to rule out any other disease. Irrespective of the nature of the treatment, there are certain options that can be adopted for successful PPP removal.

Radiosurgery:

Under high magnification a small precision electrode is used to target the papules and fade them away by producing free radicals using radio waves. This is one of the most successful treatments so far. It gives aesthetically pleasing results but there is comparatively more downtime than other laser treatments available but this is only available in handful centres in UK.

CO2 Laser:Precise laser beam is used to vaporise the papules. The precision tip makes sure that no adjacent healthy tissues get damaged during the process. The papules are vaporised after applying numbing cream, this makes the process pain free. The patient may feel slight discomfort after local anaesthesia starts to fade. In comparison to Radiosurgery, the downtime is quite low as it is a non-invasive process. The results are exceptionally good without any scarring.

Cryotherapy:In this process, liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the papules and their growth. Liquid nitrogen has an extremely low temperature to freeze the skin growth forever.

At Renew Skin and Health Clinic our specialist doctor uses number of methods including Carbon Dioxide laser treatment for PPP and radio-surgery (electro-surgery) to vaporise these unwanted growths. You may book your consultation here or may call at 0126 422 454 to speak to our doctor.

Fordyce spots: Symptoms and Treatments

Fordyce Spot Removal

Fordyce spots are the sebaceous glands that are responsible for lubricating the hair follicles but they don’t have hair. They appear in different places like lips, scrotum and shaft of the penis in men, and labia in women. It is a common condition but in certain cases, these spots appear prominently which makes the bearer conscious about them. Up to 80% of adults have these spots since birth but they become elevated or visible after hitting puberty.

These spots are usually yellowish white but they can also appear red pale or skin coloured depending upon the place of their occurrence. They are absolutely harmless and don’t show any symptoms.

Should I be worried about my Fordyce Spots?

As long as there is no change in appearance, itching or bleeding, or appearance of new spots, you can leave them alone as they are mere sebaceous glands with no hair follicles. If they are on your genitals, you may mistake them as pearly penile papules or STI. They do impact the bearer psychologically due to the unappealing appearance. In such cases, it becomes important to opt for treatment.

What are effective treatments of Fordyce spots?

When opting for a treatment, it becomes important to be aware of the expected results. Some treatments do treat the spots but they leave a scar on the treated area. You can choose to have treatment from many of these options;

Topical ointment:Although it sounds attractive but till to date there is no concrete solution with topical ointments or creams.

Laser treatment:CO2 laser treatment for Fordyce spots has been considered as most successful treatment so far. The precise beam of the laser makes sure that it targets only the spots irrespective of the size and vaporises it to a skin surface level. It is very important for the laser operator to vaporise it precisely to the surface and not deep enough to create craters. At Renew Skin and Health Clinic, our clinical lead makes sure that he himself takes the charge of the process, it being a critical treatment. This procedure is painless as it is performed under the effect of local anaesthesia.

Micro-punch surgery:In this process, a pen-style scalpel is used to puncture the glands. You may call it as an invasive process. With the involvement of scalpel there is significant risk of scarring. There are however almost zero chances of recurrence.
