Symptoms and Treatments of Ota Nevus

It can be very well called as a skin blemish that usually appears on forehead, face, around or in some part of the eye and inside the mouth. It is unilateral, which means it appears on one side but in rare cases, the discolouration can be seen on both sides. If it appears on both sides it may be called as Nevus of Hori. Similarly, if it is around the shoulder or arm or back it may be called as Nevus of Ito.

Why do you have Ota Nevus?

It is more commonly found in Asian and Japanese population and certainly in the female population. There are rarely any cases found in the white or Caucasian population. The symptoms are there at the time of birth or start to appear at the puberty

It is also referred to as melanocytosis as the possible reason that has been reckoned is the accumulation of melanocytes (cells that produce melanin). However, there is no concrete evidence for this. The result of these accumulated cells is the greyish or blue-ish pigmentation of the area.

Is Ota Nevus Dangerous?

It is absolutely harmless skin blemish but yes, it does require a close follow up. It is important to keep a track of the growth, change in appearance and colour. Especially, if the pigmentation is in the eye, it may lead to glaucoma. Drastically changing nevus or nevi may turn into malignant melanoma at the site of the lesion. So, it is always advised to keep a close tab on the lesions.

Treatments of Ota Nevus

It is a benign condition and does not necessarily require treatment but yes, due to its non-pleasant appearance it impacts psychologically. In such cases, treatment can be opted. There are different treatments available but results vary from person to person and the treatment requires multiple sessions. However, the cases of recurrences have been reported even after successful treatment.

Different available treatments:

Camouflage:Well, this is not a treatment. Using cosmetic products, the blemishes can be concealed under the layers of make-up. As this is not the sure-shot solution, there is always a psychological fear of exposing them unwantedly.

Laser therapies:

IPL and Nd: YAG or Q-switched laser treatments are giving excellent results in certain cases. The results may vary from person to person depending upon the skin type and severity of the lesion. Laser and light devices may work together on melanocytes (melanin-producing cells). Like mentioned earlier, the results may vary depending upon the colour of the skin.

When it comes to ocular nevus, which means pigmentation in the eye, it is always recommended to forgo the treatment as it’s virtually impossible to remove scleral pigmentation and therefore it is better to leave the blemish alone as eye being a critical area to treat on.
